Akron Marathon
The 2011 Akron Marathon once again promises to bring a full day of excitement and fun to the table.

This annual event occurs in the fall and runners must be at least 16 years old to participate. The only exceptions are for the relay run (15 year age minimum).

Road Runner is the proud sponsor of this Ohio distance running event. This USATF sanctioned course has become a favorite in a relatively short period of time.

Although this marathon is not as large as the Columbus Marathon there are thousands of individuals who attend each year. Many participants have also stated that the Akron Marathon is one of the best organized and best prepared events for US runners.

Registration Facts

Online registration is readily available for the Akron Marathon. The last days to register are going to be at the annual expo. Fees are cheapest for those individuals who sign up from Feb-May. You can choose to register for the marathon division, the ½ marathon, the 5 person relay team, or sign up for the combo event or the Half&Half.

All registered participants will receive a free Goodie Bag. There are also going to be commemorative medallions available when your race is completed. Entrants will get a subscription to ‘Running Times’ magazine and free entrance to the Health and Fitness exposition.

If you register for the marathon you will get a free jacket and there are shirts available for the participants in the ½ marathon or relay division. Everyone will receive free food and drinks and the event organizers are going to provide timing and pacing services.

Akron Marathon Course

The standard 26.2 mile course for the Akron Marathon begins in the downtown area. The start will be at the Morley Health Center and Canal Park Stadium is where the finish line is located.

The surrounding landscape changes constantly along the course of the run. You will pace yourself through pleasant suburbs, along city streets and through some tree-lined trails. The flat terrain is also interspersed with some rolling hills that provide challenges for the less disciplined runners.

A total of 4 energy gel stations and 19 fluid stations will be available. There are also 14 stations where first aid services will be provided. At least 200 portable restroom units are going to be set up along the course. More than 2000 volunteers will also be present along the marathon route, from start to finish.

The surface of the course will mostly consist of paved asphalt and concrete. However there is an unpaved stretch that consists of some crushed limestone terrain along the Towpath Trail. The surface is actually more comfortable than the paved course and it extends for a distance of approximately 4 miles.

There are no pets, bikes, skateboards or other types of vehicles that will be allowed. If anyone fails to abide by this course rule they will be disqualified and removed from the race.

Marathon Training Tips

Are you still searching for a marathon training plan that fits your needs? My 100 Day Marathon Plan review tells you all about Marius Bakken’s revolutionary method to train for a marathon. Make sure to read it!

Your real marathon training will have taken place over a number of weeks, or months. However there are a few tips that can help you further prepare for this challenging sporting event.

The race will begin at 7:30 am and runners are encouraged to enjoy a light morning meal. The meal should consist primarily of energy beverages and healthy carbs. If you eat a whole grain cereal, whole wheat toast with jelly, and fruit juice you should be good to go.

Do not overdress in heavy clothing and make sure that your garments are loose, light-weight and comfortable.

You should not use a brand new pair of running shoes for a marathon event. Use the shoes that you have already broken in during your past weeks of training.

Hats, sunglasses and Chapstick are essential items that you should not overlook.

Stretch your muscles before you reach the starting line.

Bandages or petroleum jelly can be used to help prevent abrading or chafing of the nipples
