8 Tips for Your First Marathon Training
Check with your doctor
Yes, this is my first tip for your marathon preparation. A marathon asks a lot from your body so I recommend you visit your doctor to explain your plans. Your health comes first!
Absorb information
Are you already an avid reader? Good! If not, make sure to deepen your knowledge of the body in relation to running. Relevant information can be found on the Internet and in books. Contact me for advice on which books to read.
Nutrition and hydration
Make sure to get the right nutrition and fluids. You need to stay healthy on your path to running a marathon. Check out my article about marathon nutrition for details.
A running shoe that fits
One of the most important elements to your success is a good running shoe. The right shoe will prevent injuries and feel comfortable when you are running.
Go to a well-known running store and ask advice from an expert. Always run with your new shoes before buying them. Sometimes you can find a better deal by first visiting a store and then buying the shoes online.
Set a realistic goal
Is this the first time you are participating in a marathon? Don’t put too much thought in your first race time; the most important thing is to cross the finish line at all.
A faster time will come with experience, so don’t start in front and blow yourself up in the first five miles.
Warming up and cooling down
Don’t forget to include a solid warm-up before your training run and a cool-down after. Start running at an easy pace and finish with jogging, walking and some stretching.
Share your marathon plan with your family and friends
You need to set aside quite some time for your marathon preparation, with consistent training for at least for three months. Talk about your goals with your family and friends.
Train yourself mentally
Your first marathon will be both a physical and mental challenge. A strong physical state may have a positive influence on your mind and vice versa. Make sure to train yourself mentally and physically.
